Devotional 2: Against All Odds

How have you seen your own struggles and hardships produce perseverance, character, and hope in your life?

In Romans 5:3-4, the Apostle Paul reminds us that our struggles and hardships can produce perseverance, character, and hope. As believers, we are called to trust in God even in the midst of difficult circumstances, knowing that he is at work in our lives to shape us into the people he wants us to be.

Have you ever faced a situation where you felt like the odds were stacked against you? How did you respond to that challenge?

In the 2015-2016 Premier League season, Leicester City faced incredible odds as they fought to win the championship. Pundits and fans alike had little faith in the team, expecting them to struggle and potentially even get relegated. However, the players refused to give up and worked tirelessly to overcome the odds. Here are some fact regarding the team.

-Leicester City spent a total of £29 million on transfers in the summer leading up to the 15-16 EPL season.

-This made them the 16th highest spenders in the league that season.

-Despite this, they were given odds of 5000-1 to win the championship by bookmakers at the start of the season.

-This was the same odds as Elvis Presley being found alive and well.

-Leicester City’s squad had an average age of just 25.9 years old, making them one of the youngest teams in the league.

-They had the third-lowest wage bill in the league, with an average weekly wage of £33,610.

-The team was managed by Claudio Ranieri, who had been appointed as manager just a few months before the start of the season.

-Leicester City had narrowly avoided relegation the previous season, finishing in 14th place.

-The team had only been promoted to the Premier League two years prior, after winning the Championship in the 2013-2014 season.

-Leicester City had never won the top flight of English football in their 132-year history prior to the 15-16 season.

Despite their struggles and the negative comments from others, Leicester City remained focused on their goal and persevered through the challenges they faced. They developed a resilience and character that helped them to stay strong even when things seemed impossible. And in the end, their hard work paid off, as they made history by winning the championship against all expectations.

Self-reflection questions:

What challenges or struggles are you currently facing? How are you responding to those challenges?

How can you develop perseverance and character in the midst of difficult circumstances?

In what ways can you find hope and encouragement in the face of overwhelming odds?

Heavenly Father, we pray that you would give us the same perseverance, character, and hope that they demonstrated in the face of great challenges. Help us to trust in you even when the odds seem stacked against us, and to rely on your strength and power to see us through. May we grow in faith and become the people you want us to be. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bible verse:

We know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. -Romans 5:3-4
